Top security tips for keeping your crypto secure

Ensuring the security of your crypto is essential for survival whether you’re day trading or buying crypto as an investment.

As an investor, you want to keep your portfolio or your digital assets secure. It is possible to become a victim of a hack. At Okcoin, we want to provide our customers with security best practices so you are smartly securing your assets regardless of which crypto or on what exchange you end up trading.

Check to see how many of these you are currently using:

Device security

Your devices hold some of your most personal, confidential, and valuable information. Make sure this data is safe:

  • Perform regular virus scans
  • Install updates to your computer in order to stay up-to-date on security
  • Encrypt your hard drive so that only you have access
  • Don’t. accept and plug-in foreign or unknown USB devices
  • Don’t use a public computer when logging into your accounts because the computer could be security compromised
  • Avoid being the victim of a SIM swap. Don’t use your phone number for 2FA. We recommend Google Authenticator. Learn how to set-up Google Authenticator

Web security

Limiting your exposure across third-party websites and applications means being careful about what you accept and how you manage your accounts. Follow these tips to mitigate your risk:

  • Use a password generating service to create unique and complex passwords for every account
  • Be wary of phishing attacks, a form of cyber attack that uses your email as a weapon. Always check the sender’s address.
  • Don’t connect to unsecured wifi, like at a coffee shop or airport, and instead use your phone’s hotspot, which provides a secure internet connection

Account security

Our accounts represent us online. It’s important that no one is able to impersonate you and gain access to your accounts. Follow these steps to secure your identity and personal data:

  • Employ 2-factor authentication (2FA) for an additional layer of account security
  • Use strong passwords that include eight or more characters, upper and lower case, numbers, and special characters
  • Change your passwords regularly
  • Leverage a password management system to keep your passwords organized and safe instead of saving passwords to your browser, which makes them vulnerable
  • Periodically review and cross-check your transaction and login history on sites that track your activity, like financial institutions
  • Use cold hardware wallets that are not connected to the internet to store your digital assets and private keys
  • Do not enter your seed phrase unless you are confident it’s not a phishing scam
